Rachel & Crew Invited To More Diverse Academy

0

It was announced, earlier today, that The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is extending invitations to join the organization to a record 683 new artists and executives. Rachel, along with fellow “Spotlight” crew, editor Tom McArdle, producer Michael Sugar, Sound department members Paul Hsu and George Lara and screenwriter Josh Singer, were some of the invitees.

This record intake of new members (compared to 322 invitations last year) is a response to the #OscarsSoWhite campaign that took place earlier this year. The 2016 class is therefore an active push for diversity, within the organisation, with 46% of the invitees female and 41% people of color.

Rachel in Support of Grassy Narrows Toxic Clean-up

0

Along with a diverse group of musicians, artists and celebrities, Rachel has joined the call to clean up a massive mercury contamination that has plagued the Grassy Narrows First Nation community in northern Ontario, Canada, for generations. The campaign, asking people to sign the open letter “We Stand With Grassy Narrows”, is an initiative by the David Suzuki Foundation, a foundation that aims to conserve the Canadian environment and find solutions that will create a sustainable country.

Other celebrities to have signed the letter are Stephen Lewis, Wade Davis, Margaret Atwood, Ed Begley Jr., Graeme Gibson, Naomi Klein, Jane Fonda and more.

Between 1962 and 1970, a pulp and paper mill, near the English-Wabigoon River System, dumped over 9,000 kilograms of mercury into the river, poisoning fish and other aquatic life forms. The mill was situated upstream from several First Nations communities, including Grassy Narrows. Residents of the small town are still suffering from mercury contamination.

“Toulouse” – A Collaboration Between Rachel and Artist Daniel Romano

0

As early in March did we get the news that Rachel would collaborate with music artist Daniel Romano on his new album “Mosey”. Daniel, a musician, poet and visual artist based out of Welland, Ontario, has known Rachel for a couple of years. He recently spoke to Kreative Kontrol about his album and commented on working with Rachel:

“The song basically called for it [a collaboration]. Once it was written it was a two-character type song and it felt like a character that could go beyond a vocal performance. Something that needed more feeling than just signing”

The song itself is a 3-minute 40-second, light-hearted duet about man with “nothing to lose” who then falls madly in love with a Parisian girl and suddenly realizes life is worth living. It’s heart-rending storytelling at its best and you can listen to the whole song on New West Records’ YouTube channel (video embedded below).

After listening to the song, be sure to check out the full album, “Mosey”. It is an album splintering of genres and musical exploration and can be ordered through Amazon & Itunes.

“Sonic Sea” – Discovery Channel Premiere

0

In efforts to shine a light on the disastrous effects of underwater noise pollution, Rachel McAdams is narrating “Sonic Sea”, a Discovery Channel film part of the Discovery Impact series. The documentary is premiering Thursday, May 19th at 9 PM ET/PT.

The 60-minute documentary travels beneath the ocean’s surface to uncover the impact industrial and military ocean noise has on whales and other marine life. Many life forms in the ocean depend on sound to mate, find food, raise their young, migrate and defend against predators. But when this symphony of life is disrupted the consequences are sometimes deadly.

“I was shocked by it and very emotional and surprised about how little I knew about what’s going on in our oceans. You don’t hear it, but it’s a whole cacophony down there.”, Adams said after having received the rough cut of the documentary from the filmmaker.

Compelled by the footage, the actress decided to lend her voice to the project, that in addition features renowned ocean experts Dr. Sylvia Earle, Dr. Paul Spong, Dr. Christopher Clark and Jean-Michel Cousteau as well as Grammy-Award winning musician, human rights and environmental activist Sting.

“Sonic Sea” premieres Thursday, May 19th at 9 PM ET/PT, exclusively on Discovery Channel.

“Spotlight” at the 88th Annual Academy Awards

0

The film award season 2015-2016 officially wrapped up yesterday, Sunday, with the 88th Annual Academy Awards, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). In conclusion – it has been a big weekend for “Spotlight“.

First, the movie managed to take home five awards (one being Best Feature) at the Independent Spirit Awards this Saturday. Then, yesterday, the “Spotlight” crew were in for another treat – or actually two – as they won both Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay.

The movie was nominated for an additional four awards, one being Best Supporting Actress where Rachel, for her role as reporter Sacha Pfeiffer, got her first ever Academy Award nomination. She lost to Alicia Wikander, who took home the award for her role as Gerda Wegener in “The Danish Girl“.

Similarly, Mark Ruffalo, for his role in “Spotlight“, got nominated for Best Supporting Actor, but lost to Mark Rylance (one can imagine that Ruffalo got excited for a split second as they were announcing the winner) for his work as Rudolf Abel in “Bridge of Spies“. It was Mark’s third Academy Award nomination.

The other two Academy Award nominations for “Spotlight” were Best Director and Best Film Editing.

During the evening, Rachel, along with actor Michael B. Jordan (“Creed“) presented the award for Best Cinematography. It went to Emmanuel Lubezki for his work in “The Reventant“. Back in 2012, Emmanuel and Rachel worked together on the drama flick “To The Wonder” and they seemed happy to reunite, if only for a brief moment.

This has been a big year for Rachel, being part of major projects both on the big and small screen. We are excited to see what is in store for the future!
