Christine Palmer – Who is Rachel playing?

With “Doctor Strange” soon hitting the theaters (Nov 4th) and with the first ever TV spot (embedded below) being released earlier this week we only thought it appropriate to talk about Christine Palmer. You know, the character Rachel is playing in the movie. Oh, you actually don’t know who that is? Well, let us give you a quick run-through of a character whose appearance might be Marvel hinting at something big!

Let’s start from the beginning.

Between 1972 and 1973 Marvel released a new series of comics, namely “Night Nurse“, in an attempt to draw in female readers, whom, at that point, were very few. The comics center around three female nurses, working at a secret clinic in New York, whose main purpose is to treat superheroes that can not turn to regular hospitals.

These three nurses are Linda Carter, Georgia Jenkins, and Rachel’s character, Christine Palmer, whom all bear the title “Night Nurse”. In the series you follow their “drama, danger, death”-type life in a Marvel superhero cross-over platform that is the clinic.

Now, I talk about the Night Nurses as a group but there is one that, essentially, is the lead character – Linda Carter. The story focuses mainly on her and the only connection to the “Doctor Strange“-comics is between Linda Carter and the doctor himself. Throughout the story-line of Linda Carter she has occasionally teamed up with Dr. Strange and the two have even shared a few romantic moments.

This makes you wonder, why isn’t Rachel playing the character of Linda Carter instead of Christine Palmer? She seems to have the role of someone who is close to Dr. Strange, I mean, just judging by the trailer where she is worryingly by Strange’s side at the hospital (!).

I don’t have the answer. Sorry.

One can of course speculate, and that’s when it gets interesting! You see, this role of Linda Carter was previously thought to be played by actress Rosario Dawson in the Netflix original series, “Daredevil“, back in early 2015. But it was eventually revealed that she (Rosario) was playing another Marvel character named Claire Temple (who shares a very similar background to Linda Carter).

When asked about why Rosario was being cast as Claire Temple, “Daredevil” showrunner Steven S. DeKnight said,

“She [Rosario Dawson] was going to be an actual Night Nurse from the comics and the feature side had plans for her down the road . . . so we just switched to another character that was kind of the same realm of Night Nurse.”

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the mentioned Night Nurse is Linda Carter, especially since she is featured in the “Daredevil” comics. From there, one can assume that the makers of “Doctor Strange” were met with the same restriction. And what this could mean . . .

. . . is that, maybe, there is a “Night Nurse” series in the works (which in itself would be awesome) that most probably would feature Rachel, playing Christine Palmer, as part of the crew. Now, that would be a huge deal for Rachel McAdams!

But, one can never be sure when it comes to the realm of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. One can, however, hope.

“The Little Prince” – Premiere Tomorrow + Early Sketches

A quick reminder that “The Little Prince” premieres tomorrow, Friday, on Netflix U.S. The movie will also be released in selected theaters in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Apart from a stellar cast (Jeff Bridges, Rachel McAdams, James Franco, Marion Cotillard, Benicio Del Toro, Ricky Gervais and more) retelling the 1943 story of “The Little Prince“, the movie, as of now, also scores a high 96% on rotten tomatoes, making it certified “Fresh”. It also scores high on Metacritics with a rating of 72!

Rachel, who voices The Mother in the movie, believes the movie has received such high praise because of its emotional intensity and the fact it pays such close homage to the original book.

“The Little Prince does a fantastic job of celebrating life’s mysteries,” she says. “When we grow up, it’s easy to need an answer for every question. Just like the book, the movie pays attention to the importance of enjoying the journey and our relationships, and not necessarily understanding everything. It all circles back to the famous quote from the book, which is ‘What is essential is invisible to the eye’.”

The director, Mark Osbourne (Kung Fu Panda), recently released some early on sketches (gallery below) of the movie to show part of the progress that went into bringing the 1943 fable into to life for a modern audience.

To learn more about the making of the movie you can purchase the Titan Books’ “The Little Prince – The Art of the Movie“. It takes you through the creative process of bringing author Antoine de Saint-Exupery’s  1943 story to life, showcasing various behind-the-scenes photographs, drawings, animated screenshots and production art from the movie.

Comic-Con 2016 – What Rachel wore

This years’ San Diego convention saw many Hollywood A-list stars bring their fashion a-game to the panels. Everything from dresses to pants, the female actresses were sporting polished and put together outfits straight from the runway.

Attending the press event, Rachel looked glam and sporty in her figure hugging  mid-thigh mesh dress. The dress flaunted a black netted overlay that gave for subtle hues of dark green, blue and beige from her underlying piece. Accented with orange detailing around the neck, the long sleeved dress, along with matching colored pumps and manicure, made for quite a dark look. However, brightened by pink lips and a beaming smile, Rachel managed to don a glistening look!

Not only Rachel attended the “Doctor Strange” panel in style – her co-star, Tilda Swinton, took the stage with a bold look. A  sleek green velvet pantsuit that was straight from the Haider Ackermann Fall 2016 RTW runway.

Rachel & Crew Invited To More Diverse Academy

It was announced, earlier today, that The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is extending invitations to join the organization to a record 683 new artists and executives. Rachel, along with fellow “Spotlight” crew, editor Tom McArdle, producer Michael Sugar, Sound department members Paul Hsu and George Lara and screenwriter Josh Singer, were some of the invitees.

This record intake of new members (compared to 322 invitations last year) is a response to the #OscarsSoWhite campaign that took place earlier this year. The 2016 class is therefore an active push for diversity, within the organisation, with 46% of the invitees female and 41% people of color.

Some of the new members include John Boyega (Star Wars), Idris Elba (Pacific Rim), Brie Larson (Room), Kate Beckinsale (Love & Friendship), Michael B. Jordan (Creed) and Emma Watson (The Bling Ring).

Rachel in Support of Grassy Narrows Toxic Clean-up

Along with a diverse group of musicians, artists and celebrities, Rachel has joined the call to clean up a massive mercury contamination that has plagued the Grassy Narrows First Nation community in northern Ontario, Canada, for generations. The campaign, asking people to sign the open letter “We Stand With Grassy Narrows”, is an initiative by the David Suzuki Foundation, a foundation that aims to conserve the Canadian environment and find solutions that will create a sustainable country.

Other celebrities to have signed the letter are Stephen Lewis, Wade Davis, Margaret Atwood, Ed Begley Jr., Graeme Gibson, Naomi Klein, Jane Fonda and more.

Between 1962 and 1970, a pulp and paper mill, near the English-Wabigoon River System, dumped over 9,000 kilograms of mercury into the river, poisoning fish and other aquatic life forms. The mill was situated upstream from several First Nations communities, including Grassy Narrows. Residents of the small town are still suffering from mercury contamination.

“Toulouse” – A Collaboration Between Rachel and Artist Daniel Romano

As early in March did we get the news that Rachel would collaborate with music artist Daniel Romano on his new album “Mosey”. Daniel, a musician, poet and visual artist based out of Welland, Ontario, has known Rachel for a couple of years. He recently spoke to Kreative Kontrol about his album and commented on working with Rachel:

“The song basically called for it [a collaboration]. Once it was written it was a two-character type song and it felt like a character that could go beyond a vocal performance. Something that needed more feeling than just signing”

The song itself is a 3-minute 40-second, light-hearted duet about man with “nothing to lose” who then falls madly in love with a Parisian girl and suddenly realizes life is worth living. It’s heart-rending storytelling at its best and you can listen to the whole song on New West Records’ YouTube channel (video embedded below).

After listening to the song, be sure to check out the full album, “Mosey”. It is an album splintering of genres and musical exploration and can be ordered through Amazon & Itunes.
