“Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” Tops Box Office

The first box office results are in for “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” which hit theaters this weekend and it topped the box office with an estimated $40.02 million, “Alvin and the Chipmunks 3″ ($23,5 million) came in second and Mission: Impossible 4 third ($13 million).

Warner Bros. Pictures’ Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows easily topped the domestic box office its first weekend, earning an estimated $40 million from 3,703 theaters, an average of $10,807 per theater. The opening was quite a bit down from Sherlock Homes, which debuted to $62.3 million over Christmas weekend in 2009. The sequel, which cost about $125 million to make, was directed by Guy Ritchie and stars Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Noomi Rapace, Jared Harris, Eddie Marsan, Stephen Fry and Rachel McAdams.

Did you see “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” this weekend?

New Possible Project: “Passion” with Noomi Rapace?

A new possible project was announced yesterday, IndieWire first reported that Rachel is currently in talks to join her “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” co-star Noomi Rapace in “Passion” which will be directed by Brian De Palma.

Brian de Palma is wasting no time moving forward on “Passion,” his remake of the 2011 French psychodrama, “Crime d’Amour,” which is shaping up for a March 5th shoot date in Berlin. Word is that Rachel McAdams is in talks to join Noomi Rapace in the film based on Alain Corneau’s twisted murder tale starring Kristin Scott Thomas as an older executive who takes revenge on her protege (Ludivine Sagnier). Rapace and McAdams also co-star in the upcoming “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” which opens stateside on Friday.

Budgeted at $20 million, Said Ben Said (“Carnage”) is producing the film with Paris-based SBS Productions, which was also involved in the French film. Writer-director De Palma’s version tells the story of woman who turns murderess when her boss steals her idea.

Keep in mind this is still a rumored project. Earlier this year we also heard rumors Rachel was attached to “The Emperor’s Children“, “Ecstasia” and other project but still none of them are confirmed.

Update: Deadline posted a new article and has more information about the movie and casting. It looks like this project is official, most of the time Deadline is reliable.

Rachel McAdams and Noomi Rapace are set to star in Brian De Palma’s remake of Alain Corneau’s 2010 thriller Crime D’Amour. The De Palma version will be titled Passion and begins shooting in Berlin on March 5.

Palma adding his spin to a script he wrote. A major male role and a smaller female role have yet to be cast. Those will likely be played by Europeans, with deals expected to be firmed up in January. De Palma will shoot for 10 weeks with delivery expected at the end of the year. Ben Saïd’s SBS has international sales. McAdams and Rapace are repped by UTA and Magnolia Entertainment.

More details on the Untitled Terrence Malick Project

LA Times has more details on the plot of the still untitled Terrence Malick project with Rachel and Ben Affleck. Several distributors were interested in but Terrence Malick declined. The movie is expected to release in 2012. Be sure to read the article below:

But there’s a movie that will be ready before either of those, an untitled film (formerly called “The Burial”) starring Ben Affleck (who actually replaced Bale) that Malick shot right after he finished editing “The Tree of Life.” He’s tweaking the movie in the editing room now, and it’s expected to be finished by next year (though that doesn’t mean a distributor that buys it will bring out then).

The company selling rights to the movie, FilmNation, has been secretive, to say the least, about the details (think executives reading the script in locked offices, and the “Men in Black” amnesia-laser administered afterward). Malick’s been protective, too. Several U.S. distributors made offers just on the basis of the script and some footage, said a person familiar with negotiations. So far, he’s declined to sell it.

So what’s the movie really about?

There have been scattered reports about it, but according to a person who read the script, it’s a love triangle with an international subtext. It’s also the only film Malick has ever done that’s set in the same time as the period in which he’s making it.

Here’s the breakdown, with the caveat that things could change drastically from script to screen (on “Tree,” Malick would sometimes rewrite scenes on the day of the shoot).

Basically, it concerns a philanderer (Affleck) who, feeling at loose ends, travels to Paris, where he enters a hot-and-heavy affair with a European woman (Olga Kurylenko). Said Lothario returns home to Oklahoma, where he marries the European woman (in part for visa reasons). When the relationship founders, he rekindles a romance with a hometown girl (Rachel McAdams) with whom he’s had a long history.

According to the person who read the script, there’s a bit of a happier ending than some other Malick movies (or at least a less ambiguous one than at the end of “Tree”). And a person who saw the footage said there’s also the trademark visual showiness–shots of Affleck and McAdams in Malick’s trademark man-in-nature style–as well as intriguing supporting actors: Javier Bardem, for instance, plays a priest whom Affleck’s Lothario visits for advice.

New Possible Project: “The Emperor’s Children”?

Great news, Twitch Films is reporting that Rachel is set to star in the upcoming movie adaption of “The Emperor’s Children” by Claire Messud alongside Richard Gere, Keira Knightley, and Emma Thompson. Indie Wire is reporting that Keira Knightley, Eric Bana and Richard Gere were attached to star in this movie back in 2010. Michelle Williams was mentioned for this at one point as well.

Twitch has learned that Crazy Heart writer-director Scott Cooper is replacing Noah Baumbach as the director of The Emperor’s Children. Baumbach scripted the adaptation of the novel by Claire Messud and had been attached to direct as well with Richard Gere, Rachel McAdams, Keira Knightley, and Emma Thompson all apparently attached to star. Brian Grazer will produce at Imagine Entertainment with Worldview Entertainment and IM Global financing and a spring 2012 start date being eyed.

Plot: The Emperor’s Children is about the intersections in the lives of three friends, now on the cusp of their thirties, making their way–and not–in New York City. There is beautiful, sophisticated Marina Thwaite–an “It” girl finishing her first book; the daughter of Murray Thwaite, celebrated intellectual and journalist–and her two closest friends from Brown, Danielle, a quietly appealing television producer, and Julius, a cash-strapped freelance critic. The delicious complications that arise among them become dangerous when Murray’s nephew, Frederick “Bootie” Tubb, an idealistic college dropout determined to make his mark, comes to town. As the skies darken, it is Bootie’s unexpected decisions–and their stunning, heartbreaking outcome–that will change each of their lives forever.

The shuffle is likely a result of scheduling issues for Baumbach who is currently in production on a documentary project and already slated to direct While We’re Young – which he also wrote – with Jesse Eisenberg, Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts in 2012. The shift raises questions about the status of Cooper’s Out Of The Furnace – previously known as The Low Dweller – the project Cooper is attached to direct for Relativity.

We really hope this is going to happen, we are big fan of Keira Knightley and Emma Thompson! We assume Rachel will be one of the three friends. Still no official confirmation, but let’s we will get confirmation soon.

Possible/In Development Projects Update

Rachel has quite a lot ‘rumored/in development/possible’ projects going on, still none of them are confirmed but we do have some updates on some of the projects.

• Filming for “The Reluctant Fundamentalist” started filming, Rachel was mentioned or the female lead but it looks like Kate Hudson got the part. (Source)

• There is a rumors that Colin Farell was offered the lead in “Ecstasia” directed by Wayne Kramer. It was reported before that Rachel and James McAvoy were eyed for the project. (Source)

• It looks like the “Luna“/Doug Liman project is not going to happen after all. New York Times is reporting that the movie officially got dropped because of a co-financier bailed out. Liman is now working on a project with Brad Pitt. (Source

Insiders tell Vulture that Paramount has given up on making Liman’s planned space heist movie, Luna, after co-financier Skydance bailed out of the $100+ million project.

• The Variety is reporting that Eric Bana is in talks to star in “Brilliant“. Rachel was offered the female lead in the movie back in February when Matthew McConaughey was still attached. Eric and Rachel co-starred together in “The Time Traveler’s Wife“. (Source)

All the other possible projects are still in development. We really hope Rachel will join a new movie soon but it looks like she took a break after her busy year in 2010.

“Wedding Crashers” Sequel in the works?

According to Fansshare.com there is a possibility of a “Wedding Crashers” sequel. Back in 2007 Vince Vaughn confirmed himself in an interview he and Owen Wilson were working on a script/ideas for a second “Wedding Crashers” but it was never officially announced there would be a sequel to the movie but maybe that’s about to change.

It has been suggested that there could well be a follow up to the hit 2005 comedy Wedding Crashers after one of the movies stars, Isla Fisher was overheard talking about the possibility of a sequel. The movie would be a definite hit after the success of Wedding Crashers.

An eye witness explained, “I’m a massive fan of Isla Fisher and when I saw her I couldn’t help but “accidentally” overhear her conversation and she was saying something about being offered the chance to return for Wedding Crashers 2 but she didn’t go into details about it.”

Wedding Crashers, which also starred Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn, made $283 million worldwide and a sequel would obviously be very profitable. However, the storyline would be a stumbling block as the main characters crash weddings to pick up girls but both men ended up with their dream girl at the end of the movie. If Wedding Crashers 2 does get the go ahead, do not expect to see it before 2015.

Source

We are not sure how reliable the source is but we thought it was interesting there could be a follow-up to “Wedding Crashers“. Keep in mind this is still a rumor and if there is a sequel it could be Rachel isn’t returning to play Claire. Thanks to our affiliate Isla Fisher Web for pointing this news out.

Rachel in “The Reluctant Fundamentalist”?

Yet another possible project surfaced. While I was looking for new information on the current projects I came across a new possible project listed on Itsonthegrid.com. Rachel is listed as Erica (lead) in the upcoming movie “The Reluctant Fundamentalist” based on the novel by Mohsin Hamid. The movie will be directed by Mira Nair who got the rights to the movie since 2007. Nair confirmed a few weeks ago the male lead will be Rizwan Ahmed who will be playing Changez.

Production Company: Cine Mosaic, Mirabai Films
Studio: Independent Feature – Financed
Director: Mira Nair
Producer: Mira Nair, Lydia Pilcher
Writer: Mohsin Hamid, Bill Wheeler

Plot: Changez, a Princeton graduate from Pakistan, succeeds on Wall Street, thriving in his adopted city. But in the wake of September 11, Changez finds his position in his adopted city suddenly overturned and his relationships tested. His involvement with pro-Pakistan demonstrations are called into question as is his connection to a possibly extremist student. After another attack, Changez’s link to the student implicates him indirectly to the group responsible. A thriller unfolds as Changez is forced to choose – a country, a way of life, where he belongs.

Yet there is still the matter of his beloved Erica, who is friendly with Changez but mourning the death of her former boyfriend, Chris, from lung cancer. Changez is polite and formal; Erica is uninhibited, going topless, for instance, on a beach in Greece. The two become intimate, but she is haunted by Chris, and after 9/11 her sadness mysteriously turns pathological. She lands in an institution, then disappears.

We don’t have full access to Itsonthegrid.com so we can not read the related articles and we don’t know how much Rachel is actually involved in the project. IMDB and NY Times aren’t listing this project on Rachel’s resumé and we didn’t find more sources that confirm her involvement so keep in mind this is yet another possible project for Rachel.

“Midnight in Paris” Goes Nationwide Again

“Midnight in Paris” became Woody Allen’s higest grossing film ever a few weeks ago. Late May the movie was released limited but after it’s huge success, it was number #13 of the top box office weekend openings of all time , the movie got a wide release and now the movie will go wide again on August 26.

‘Midnight in Paris’ Getting a Late-Summer Expansion
Sony Classics’ Woody Allen film, starring Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams, will play nationwide again on Aug. 26.

Sony Pictures Classics is dying to go back to Paris.

In nine days, the specialty house plans to re-expand Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris, a surprise indie hit that has become the veteran filmmaker’s highest grossing film in the U.S. since its opening in May. Midnight’s domestic gross through Tuesday is $49.9 million (it’s grossed more than $83 million worldwide).

Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams and Michael Sheen star in the story of an idealistic writer who makes nightly excursions back in time to 1920s Paris, where he gains perspective and inspiration from iconic expatriates such as Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Salvador Dali.

Last weekend, the film was playing in 400 theaters; on the 26th, it will be playing in an additional 500 to 600 theaters, hoping to benefit from a late-summer rush. SPC co-president Tom Bernard says there will be a new TV campaign to encourage audiences to see it again and “take a friend to Paris.”

“This movie has played strong all summer,” says Bernard, who said he wants to keep the momentum going ahead of an awards push for Allen and the movie.

SPC also released the previous two Allen films, You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger and Whatever Works.

The movie is also getting Oscar buzz for possible Best Picture, Best Director and maybe even Best (Supporting) Actor/Actress for one of the cast members according to multiple blogs. Deadline recently wrote an article about “Midnight in Paris” winning the Best Picture if the Oscars were held right now. Let’s hope the buzz wil eventually lead to actual nominations!
