Next week marks a huge milestone for our site Rachel McAdams Online because we will celebrate our 8 year anniversary. This site was launched on June 17, 2004. We wanted to do something special to celebrate the site’s milestone and Rachel’s amazing career so far.

We will make 8 extra post on the main site with 8 reasons why we are a fan of her and we will publish a new post with reason every day, in no particular order, until our anniversary. We hope it will be a great way to look back and on Rachel’s amazing career so far, because after all it really started 8 years ago with her break out movies “The Notebook” and “Mean Girls“.

I want to thank my friend Jess for this idea, she recently did birthday celebration special on her amazing Reese Witherspoon site; show her some love by visiting her sites.

So let’s kick off with the very first reason after the jump!

Reason #1: Because of her interest in the environment

Rachel has a passion for the environment; to live green and to reduce her carbon footprint. She co-founded the website Greenissexy.org, with her friends Megan (her co-star in “The Hot Chick“) and Didi, which was launched over 5 years ago. The website gives the reader tips, fun facts and more on how to live green but in a fun and positive way!

Green is sexy came about when three friends realized that exchanging quips & tips on ways to make an impact on the environment was becoming daily conversation. They decided that, with a bit of research and some help from their friends, they could spread the word to all sorts of people and really make a difference. green is sexy is about tiny changes, big impact. Rachel lives ‘green’ herself, she doesn’t own a car herself and uses her bike as often as possible especially in her hometown Toronto. She supports tree planting organisations, she never publicly mentions an organisation but Green is sexy website recommended the Arbor Day Foundation. Did you know that Rachel was one of the judges during the 2007 TreeHugger Live Earth panel?

She uses green power in her house and she developed an ‘OCD for unplugging anything with a plug‘. She unplugs everything when she is out of town. Back in 2009 while promoting “Sherlock Holmes” promotion tour Rachel even shared her fun anecdote at the Conan O’Brien show about ‘getting in trouble‘ because she unplugged her parents phone. She also revealed in her Conan O’Brien interview that she wears soy underwear.

Rachel mentions “Blue Planet Runas one of the five book that made a difference to her back in 2009. It’s about a project founded by Jin Zidell, a philanthropist and environmentalist who wants as many people as possible to have clean drinking water.

“I look at the world through a green lens now, but you can’t make yourself crazy. That feeling of green guilt can be really inhibiting. It’s about a changing mind-set, remembering to turn off the water when you are brushing your teeth.”
-Rachel McAdams, Vogue 2009

In 2010 Rachel supported the Matter of Trust Hair Boom project after the massive oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico. She also brings her own bag when she goes grocery shopping so she doesn’t have to use and waste a bag from the store.

Rachel encourages the industry to change, she even recommended the “Morning Glory” make-up department to use environmental friendly products.

I’m excited that people are getting on board and that the Oscars had their first green event. Actors have a fair amount of say in how a film is made and can affect a lot of change. Hollywood could be a pioneer and there could be a huge reduction in greenhouse-gas emissions. We could still make great art and great movies without the burden of how much they cost to the environment.
-Rachel McAdams, Green Living 2008

Most recently Rachel was part of the portrait series by photographer Jason Bruggen as part of the Mega Quarry protest in her hometown Ontario. She was photographed, just like other people from Ontario, holding a sign to protest. It’s not the first time she is part of a project like this, in April 2007 she shot a short film for Live Earth with director Alma Harel in Los Angeles.

She was also spotted at the Occupy movement in Toronto, she later told Glamour Magazine: “I wanted to educate myself. People have said it’s unfocused, but I appreciate that there are so many different groups coming together peacefully, saying there are things that are broken in the system, and we need to put our heads together“.

We have more in-depth information about the green causes Rachel is supporting, and more information about the projects she joined. And be sure to read her Green Living interview she did back in 2008 with Megan and Didi. She frequently mentions her interest in the environment in interviews over the past few years, including in her Marie Claire Australia, Vogue U.S. and her Elle interview, so be sure to head over to our press archive to read more interviews.

“She [Rachel McAdams] lives true to her theories, a very green, responsible life.”
-Eric Bana, USA Weekend 2009

Stay tuned, we will update our second reason tomorrow. And don’t hesitate and share your reasons why you are a fan of hers in our comment section!
